Worlds 3rd Largest Diamond Unearthed…Check Out These Carats

by Laura Steinberg

The Lucara Diamond Corporation has unearthed the third-largest diamond ever discovered at the Korowe mine in Botswana. The simply MASSIVE precious stone weighs in at 1,174 carats and was unearthed along with four other high-quality stones. On July 7th Lucara presented the diamond to Dr. Mokgweetsi E.K Masisi the President of Botswana who informed his people that HB Antwerp has offered to house the stone in Belgium and that 10 students of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) would travel with the diamond to Belgium for 3 to 6 months “to learn about Diamond processing & leadership.”

According to OANN,

“Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi said diamond mining in the country continues to provide great benefits to his people.

“In order to deliver the best return for our people, for our roads, for our hospitals, for our schools, for our environment and for development,” he expressed. “This is Botswana.”

Botswanan people on Twitter seemed extremely unconvinced that the discovery would yield any benefit for the small land-locked African nation home to about 2.3 million people (about 85% the size of Texas). Given the rampant corruption, looting, and rioting plaquing neighboring South Africa, you can’t really blame them. Here are a few Twitter comments:

  • Lol listen to this nonsense.
  • Why are you housing diamonds from your own country in countries that do not have diamonds sourced from their own land? Why not bring Belgians to your country to train your people?
  • Why in Belgium Mr President? Thought this was African and Batswana piece of history and treasure trove for future generations. Why banna why?
  • Young people? Which young people? Because you can’t be referring to those from your country.
  • Wah do you take us for Smirking face
  • Face with tears of joy cut the crap!
  • How’re are the young people become part of the story, oh His Excellency mean the young people in Belgium not Bw.
  • Lol listen to this nonsense
  • What’s the importance of that diamond to the poor BatswanaMan shrugging
  • So they have taken the diamond to Belgium. Africans we arw lead by fools

Another Huge Diamond From The Karowe Mine

In a press release from Lucara, Eira Thomas, CEO said,

“Lucara is delighted to be reporting another historic diamond recovery and its 3rd diamond over 1,000 carats, a world record for Karowe. Although complex, these diamond recoveries do contain large domains of top colour white gem that will be transformed through our partnership with HB Antwerp into valuable collections of top colour polished diamonds, very much in high demand in the market today. Besides the 1,174 carat stone, several other high quality white gems were recovered up to 148 carats in size, and year to date Karowe has produced 17 diamonds greater than 100 carats, including 5 diamonds greater than 300 carats.”

The second-largest diamond ever discovered was found in the same mine at Karowe in 2019 an enormous 1,758 carat stone according to CNN. However, the title for the largest ever still belongs safely to the 3,106-carat ‘Cullinan’ discovered in South Africa by Premier Mine Company in 1905 which was subsequently cut down to smaller stones that in part comprise the British Crown Jewels. The largest diamonds also referred to as ‘Mega-diamonds’ have all been located in Southern and Central Africa.

By comparison, the largest diamond ever mined in North America was the “552-carat yellow diamond was found at Diavik Diamond Mine, northeast of Yellowknife in October and measures about the size of a chicken egg.” According to The Independent. The brilliant yellow stone was discovered by Dominion Diamond Mines in October 2018.
