Watch: Biden snaps at reporter who confronts him on Obama locking immigrant kids in cages

by Mike Santorini

Acclaimed Mexican-American journalist Jorge Ramos pressed Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on his false claims that the Obama administration, unlike the Trump administration, “didn’t lock people up in cages.”

At the Sept. 12 Democratic presidential debate in Houston, the former vice president said: “What Latinos should look at is, comparing this president to the president we have is outrageous, number one. We didn’t lock people up in cages. We didn’t separate families. We didn’t do all of those things, number one.”

Biden previously condemned the Trump administration’s immigration policies as “an assault on human dignity and everything we stand for as a nation.”

During the interview, Ramos pressed Biden on his claims, saying, “At that debate in Houston, you said this about the Obama-Biden administration, and I quote, ‘we didn’t lock people in cages,’ but you actually did.”

“We found a picture of an eight-year-old boy from Honduras,” Ramos said.

“This was in 2014 at a detention center in McAllen, Texas,” Ramos added as he showed Biden a photo of a detained migrant child.

A stuttering Biden defended the Obama administration’s actions claiming they were just trying to keep the children “safe.”

“Yes, yes, yes and what happened was that all the unaccompanied children were coming across the border. We tried to get them out. We kept them safe and get them out of the detention centers….that were run by Homeland Security and get them into communities as quickly as we can,” Biden said.

“Many people will say these are cages,” Ramos said, to which Biden responded accusing the noted host of lying.

“You know you’re not telling the truth here about the comparison of the two things,” Biden said.

Trump’s administration has previously been unfairly accused of locking illegal immigrants, including children, in cages that were actually used during the Obama-Biden administration.

“Obama built the cages,” Trump fired back during an interview with Telemundo anchor José Díaz-Balart earlier last year. “I didn’t build them. Obama built them.”

The Washington Post has reported that the Obama-Biden administration had also deported far more people than the Trump administration during their first three years in office, when the Trump administration deported less than 800,000 immigrants, against the 1.18 million people deported by Obama and Biden.

In 2018, the Daily Caller reported that the Trump administration also did not start the practice of detaining immigrants who illegally crossed into the U.S. from the southern border.

The Obama-Biden administration had prosecuted almost 500,000 illegals, which has similarly resulted in the separation of migrant families.
