Nancy Pelosi let the cat out of the bag on her unexpected retirement plans

Nancy Pelosi’s time in Congress is winding down.

But no one knew it would be this soon.

Now Nancy Pelosi let the cat out of the bag on her unexpected retirement plans.

Nancy Pelosi won the Speaker’s gavel in 2019 on the promise that she would only serve two terms as Speaker of the House.

This is the second – and presumably final term – that Pelosi will serve as Speaker.

PBS NewsHour host Judy Woodruff asked Pelosi if she would consider serving another term as Speaker in 2023 if Democrats hold on to their majority in the House of Representatives next year.

Pelosi began her answer by saying she planned to retire in 2016 when she expected Hillary Clinton to win the Presidential Election.

But Pelosi then seemed to get ready to announce her retirement before stopping herself and pivoting to the 2022 midterms.

“Well let’s let’s take it one step at a time. I myself had thought I was leaving in 2016 when Hillary Clinton would be the President of the United States, but I don’t have any intention of declaring myself a lame duck. But nonetheless, if my husband and my children or my grandchildren are listening, I fully intend . . . we want to do some great things in this election. And many of our . . . some of our members are running for higher office, so confident are they that the Democrats will prevail,” Pelosi stated.

Had Pelosi announced she was retiring right then and there it would have set off panic in the Democrat Party as Pelosi announcing this was it for her would have been taken as a sign Pelosi thinks Democrats are doomed in 2022.

Either way, many expect this to be Pelosi’s last term in Congress.

If Democrats hang on, Pelosi promised not to be Speaker again.

If Republicans win she will be swept into the minority after having overseen the second Democrat midterm debacle – the 2010 Tea Party wave being the first.

It’s difficult to see Pelosi serving as a regular member after 20 years in leadership so all signs point towards a Pelosi retirement after the midterms.
