Mitch McConnell’s support for impeachment backfired in one big way he never saw coming

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wants Donald Trump’s scalp.

McConnell thinks impeachment is the vehicle to eject Trump and his supporters from the Republican Party.

But Mitch McConnell’s support for impeachment backfired in one big way he never saw comings.

Mitch McConnell’s grip on his perch as Senate Republican leaders is not as secure as he thinks it is.

Multiple Republican Senators – including at least one willing to go on the record – stated that they would support removing McConnell as Senate Republican leader if he voted to convict President Trump.

“If he does, I don’t know if he can stay as leader,” a top GOP Senator told CNN.

This Senator also told CNN there were multiple other Republicans in the conference who felt the same way.

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson was willing to go on the record and state that McConnell’s position as caucus leader would be untenable if he voted to convict Trump on impeachment.

“No, no, no,” Johnson responded when CNN asked if he could support McConnell for leader after a vote to convict Trump.

Johnson explained that holding a trial for Trump after he left office was “dangerous precedent” and stated “I don’t even think we should be having a trial.”

Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney is also learning the hard way that supporting impeachment is a one way ticket to losing your leadership position.

Cheney voted for the Democrats article of impeachment and conservatives in the House now have 115 signatures – more than they would need to vote to strip Cheney of her role as the number three Republican in the House – signed a petition supporting a vote of no confidence in her leadership.

McConnell just won re-election to another six year term this past November.

It is unlikely McConnell wants to spend the next five years as just another Senator in the crowd.

But if he thought he could steamroll Donald Trump and impeach him, using this sham process to exile Trump from the GOP, he badly miscalculated.
