The founder of the nonprofit crime prevention group Guardian Angels said he plans to run for mayor of New York City in 2021 “to take back the city” from Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The announcement: “I am the anti-de Blasio candidate. The part time Mayor ‘Dope from Park Slope’ has single-handedly destroyed our city. Roll with Sliwa through the subways & streets & you’ll see why I’m the only one who can #SaveOurCity,” tweeted Guardian Angels founder and radio talk show host Curtis Sliwa.

Sliwa, 65 has not yet filed paperwork to compete against de Blasio but has re-registered from a member of the Reform Party to Republican, according to the New York Post.
“I am the only candidate with the onions to take back the city,” Sliwa told The Post. “I have the street cred. I have bled in the streets. I’ve given seven lives. I have two left. I’ll use them for the City of New York.”
Sliwa founded Guardian Angels 40 years ago to protect the crime-infested subways and streets across New York City.
A few years back, he said: “When I started the Guardian Angels on February 13, 1979, I thought we’d be earning the Congressional Medal of Honor. I just felt nobody was really doing anything; everybody was just gripped in depression, a lot of anxiety. I said, ‘Look, I’m single; I don’t have a family; I have to ride these trains; I’m coming from Brooklyn,’ which was renamed Crooklyn into the Bronx, which was the belly of the beast. Why not give a try and begin patrolling the trains late at night when we’ve closed the McDonalds and I’m on my way back to Brooklyn? And for years we began to patrol as we do every time this season, right through the summer.”
Now, under de Blasio and state Democrats’ poor leadership, Sliwa fears the city is on the verge of another crime wave, particularly as a result of controversial policies like New York’s bail law that seeks to eliminate cash bail for most misdemeanors and nonviolent crimes.
“It took us a long time to crawl out of the belly of the beast of the 1970s through 1990s. Bill de Blasio and the Democrats are bringing us back in,” Sliwa told the Post.
Sliwa, who survived a murder attempt allegedly ordered by the Gambino crime family back in 1992, said if elected mayor, he will end the mayor’s security detail and place more uniformed cops to patrol the streets.
He also said he would encourage “proactive” foot patrols to cooperate with the NYPD to fight crime.
