The incident: Gillum was found intoxicated in a room at the Mondrian South Beach hotel, where police responded to a cardiac arrest call. The person who suffered the attack was 30-year-old Miami resident Travis Dyson. He was in stable condition when the police arrived. The other person in the room, in addition to Gillum, was Aldo Mejias.

Mejias said he found both Dyson and Gillum “under the influence of an unknown substance.” He said that both of them were vomiting when he arrived at the hotel and that Dyson at one point collapsed. Police said Gillum was “unable to communicate due to his inebriated state,” and that they discovered three bags of what is believed to be crystal meth in the room.

Gillum, in a statement, denied taking drugs.

The police didn’t arrest anyone. Miami Beach Mayor Dal Gelber said, “There does not exist an active investigation surrounding this matter.” It is unclear why there were no arrests in an incident that might involve illegal drugs.

The police report details the Miami Beach law enforcement response to the incident, according to Tallahassee Reports, and included a total of nine law enforcement officials, such as captains, sergeants, a lieutenant, and police officers. It also said that a photographer was on the scene and that a “BWC,” which stands for Body-Worn Camera, was used.

What it means: In the absence of an ongoing criminal investigation and case, police, under Florida public records laws, are required to publish the footage.

Background: Gillum is a former mayor of Tallahassee and a former Florida gubernatorial candidate who now works as a CNN contributor. He lost the 2018 gubernatorial race by 34,000 votes.

Dyson is a Miami Beach resident who describes himself as a trauma certified ER nurse on social media. The Daily Mail reported that he had an account on Rent.men website, which helps users find male escorts. The publication also found explicit photos and homemade porn movies of Dyson online.

Dyson told the Miami Beach Times that he had known Gillum “for a while” but said the CNN contributor never mentioned a wedding, despite saying in his statement that he was at one before going to the hotel.
